Explanation

Lichen are particularly sensitive to air pollution like SO2 because they absorb substances directly from the atmosphere. Fungi can be affected by pollution but lichens are known for their high sensitivity. Algae can also be affected, but lichen is the most commonly cited indicator organism for this type of damage. Fishes are generally less immediately affected than these surface-dwelling organisms.
