Explanation

Carbon monoxide (CO) is highly toxic as it binds to hemoglobin much more strongly than oxygen, preventing oxygen transport. CO2 and C are not acutely poisonous in the same way, and SO2 is toxic but CO is generally considered more immediately lethal at lower concentrations.
