Explanation

Hydrogen bonds are the weak chemical bonds that hold the complementary base pairs (A-T and G-C) together between the two strands of DNA. Oxygen is a component but not the primary binder. Carbon forms the backbone structure but does not bind the strands together in this manner. Nitrogen is also part of the bases but hydrogen bonds are the specific linkage.
