Explanation

Thomas Hunt Morgan and his student Calvin Bridges provided evidence for linkage, but it was W. Bateson and R.C. Punnett who initially observed 'coupling' and 'repulsion' (linkage) in sweet peas, which they mistakenly thought contradicted Mendel's independent assortment, thus discounting the idea of independent linkage as a general rule until Morgan clarified chromosomal theory.
