Explanation

Acids are generally defined as substances that release hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water, making Hydrogen the common element. Carbon is not necessarily present in all acids. Sulphur can form acids but it is not universal to all of them. Oxygen is present in many acids but not all, and H+ is the defining characteristic.
