Ammonia is a common refrigerant used in some types of air conditioners. Nitrous oxide is not typically used as the primary refrigerant in standard AC units. Freon is a brand name for CFCs which are largely phased out due to environmental concerns. CO2 can be used as a refrigerant but ammonia or other refrigerants are more commonly cited general answers.
