Explanation

When a ball is thrown vertically upward, gravity acts downward, slowing the ball. As the ball goes up, its velocity decreases continuously. At the highest point, the ball stops for an instant before coming down. At that instant, the velocity becomes zero (but acceleration due to gravity is still present).
